How the Octopus Became A Symbol At Frameable Faces! #Octosquad

The Octopus is a really cool animal.  They’re smart, fascinating to watch, and there are 289 kinds of them!  But why have they become a symbol of a local independent photography studio in West Bloomfield, MI where none of them live within thousands of miles?  Let’s find out…

Octopus

How The Octopus Became A Symbol At Frameable Faces

As you may know we name a lot of stuff here.  We name locations for the seniors who pioneer them, we name equipment and some of them even take on their own personas and start tweeting, sitting down for interviews…. etc.  Oy.

Meanwhile we have a studio light that is octagonal shaped and we started referring to “him” as “Octo” just for fun.  That was how this whole thing started.  You see, over the last few years (it will actually be exactly 3 years on 3/31/18) we have been periscoping as you may know, and along the way The📷Doug&Ally📷Morning Show!🎙☕ became a thing.  We made the trending list on the app which is owned by and integrated with Twitter as “Twitter Live” and we now have over 22k followers literally around the world.  At some point during the show when a newbie shows up we welcome them and give a tour of the studio, and the tour itself has become a daily event with many recurring hallmarks and themes of its own – one of which is Octo which somewhere along the way became “The World Famous Frameable Faces Octopus”.  Not sure the exact origins of this can be traced beyond the likely scenario of someone thinking I said Octopus one day instead of Octobox, and…..well…..take a look below and you’ll get an idea of what has happened:

Yes the World Famous Frameable Faces Octopus gave way to the rise of the #Octosquad!  Our friend Lauren (@Sound_Of_Boots) usually makes the announcement and everyone gets their octo on.  Pretty much anyone can be a member of the Octosquad, just like anyone can be a Frameable – it’s an attitude, a lifestyle if you will, and you just jump on in!

Since then octopuses (yes that’s the proper plural of octopus) have been popping up everywhere.  In the studio….

Octopus

That’s the octo we brought back from the Keys with his partner Fitzy’s Maine Lobster.  Fitzy is one of our Periscope friends who sent us that from his trip to Maine.

Octopus

These little octos who sit by Doug’s computer were a gift by Periscope friends Jacqui Of All Trades and Laughing Leo who brought them to the studio on a visit…

We even found a tiny octo with our friend Steve (Steve named him Ocho) in a bucket down in the Florida Keys on the Frameable Faces 2017 Spring Break Tour

Octos even adorn our bookmarks which we’ve been giving out as rewards for subscribers of our Patreon page…  Our friend @McFannie showed hers off with a tweet!

Octopus

It’s gotten to be such a big deal that Reflecto seems to be getting a little salty about it…

Octopus

He’ll get over it….

And there you have it!  Now you know how the #Octosquad was born and how the Octopus became such a symbol of Frameable Faces!  We hope you’ll join the Octosquad too!

21 Reasons Photography Is Completely Overrated

Yes.  Photography blows.  We should know better than anybody – we’re photographers.  Through extensive research we have compiled the 21 reasons why photography is completely overrated.

21 Reasons

21 Reasons Photography Is Completely Overrated

  1. You’re ugly and no one wants to see photos of you (shots fired! okay you’re not really ugly – this is an intentionally silly list)
  2. Your friends are ugly and no one wants to see photos of them either
  3. It costs a lot of money to actually get a good photo taken – like by an actual pro
  4. Good cameras are like way too expensive and hard to use
  5. Smartphone cameras can be a pain in the butt to figure out and even harder to use effectively than actual cameras
  6. That one time you looked really fat in that photo that was posted on Facebook
  7. You have all these photos with your ex that you never want to look at again
  8. Actual memories are better and you can kinda change them in your head to make them even a little better than they are – it’s harder to change a picture
  9. Because like, leave me alone
  10. Smiling makes your face sore
  11. Your dad is annoying – always wanting to take a picture of you
  12. Your dad is even more annoying thinking selfies make him cool
  13. Your dad is yet even more annoying doing snapchat selfies with half of his face cut off because he knows “it’s a thing”

    21 Reasons

    Exhibit A – Reason #13

  14. Your mom is annoying for all of the three previous reasons even if slightly less annoying than your dad
  15. Instagram overposters
  16. Having to explain……..like, anything
  17. Okay an example of #16 – You told someone you didn’t feel like going out but then got photographed…….out
  18. Narcissists aren’t cool in general and photography gives them an outlet to be….narcissists.
  19. Storage / Syncing struggles
  20. The awkward moment where someone is trying to imply that they want to take a picture of the rest of the group who have something in common that you don’t really have with them.  I mean, it makes sense but still totally awkward.
  21. Lists like this

So there you go – 21 reasons photography is completely overrated!  Feel free to add more to the list….

26 Of The Best Frameable Faces Vines Of All Time

***Note*** This post was written shortly before the announcement one week later that Twitter was getting rid of Vine, so this collection of Vines was looking like an epitaph of sorts (and a fun one at that), but wait!  Not so fast….as two weeks later they announced they might save it by selling it….  Stay tuned.  In the meantime enjoy!

We love Vine!  Yes it’s not very popular anymore but we have had a lot of fun there over the last few years…  We have posted 354 vines since our very first one on June 11th, 2013 when it finally became available for Droid (right before we switched to iPhones) and they’ve been watched a total of 223,603 times as of this writing!  We’ve had some great moments here at the studio and a lot of fun with Vine’s 6 second looping format, so I thought it would be fun to select some of the best and feature them in one post.  Vine is a great way to tell stories in a condensed way and in most cases for us they are repurposed from another platform like Periscope, Snapchat or Facebook Live!  Here we have 26 “for your looping pleasure” as I usually like to say on this blog.  So we have 26 vines at 6 seconds each.  That’s 26×6=156/60 = 2.6 total minutes so you should be able to zip through these in no time!!!  So here we go in reverse chronological order…

26 of our best vines

This was a recent senior session with Reed which was a classic… We spent a day in Detroit and one of those merry peddling bars of partiers came by and jumped into a photo – oh and there was a wipe out.  It’s all captured in 6 seconds….  haha!

We spoke at Podcast Movement in Chicago this past summer and on a break we decided to mess with a few people, well….because it’s fun.

Also on this Chicago trip we photographed our first senior session in the Windy City – it was a such a cool experience with Taria!

Snapchat shenanigans…. and uh – well, yeah……

This vine is legendary – the “sharting baby” will never be forgotten….

Angela our event photographer is a complete sweetheart and always game for some fun!

Here’s a bit from our panel discussion when we spoke at Summit Live (known at the time as the Periscope Community Summit) in San Francisco – Ally singing my praises of course….

So yes we’ve been married for over 20 years but Ally can’t finish ALL of my sentences….

Not gonna lie, it’s fun to feature Jason Carr and Taryn Asher since they are such a well known and beloved couple in this town from their roles on the local news…  But this session was notable for being the first and only (so far) family winter photo session and a photo from this day is displayed in the window of our studio.

Part of our “Periscope war” with Ryan Bell when he made a would-be-innocuous comment about those of us who were early adopters of live video being geeks and nerds with regard to online technology.  Well……Ally took it personally.

This one cracks us up because our senior Mario Kakos went with the Mario Brothers theme for one of the shots on his senior session…  Hilarious.

The word of the day was Eureka….  hehe

We were part of a lip sync train on Periscope – here’s a clip…. haha

Tom is the glue that holds the mall together and he visited us one day during a live broadcast and then….we’re not sure!  LOL!

More from the Ryan Bell wars….. Ryan made a Periscope “troll account” called Flammable Feces – it’s a long story.  He even used our logo!  Well I guess I freaked out a little…..

Vines

My old buddy Aaron Norvell is an actor in Hollywood and he came by the studio for pretty memorable visit….

Christian’s session was epic – an evening session that went long after sundown, and while we light footballs and volleyballs on fire all the time, it’s not every day that we light a trombone on fire!

Ally really enjoys the opportunity to teach and to give back and on this day she had a group from BBYO here through the Building Entrepreneurship program!

Claire gave us the infamous “frog incident”…. haha

Loved getting Elise’s reaction to Alanah’s prints when she came to pick them up!

Loved this family session with the Kamens!  What an awesome crew…

Here’s Ally being interviewed by Kam Carmen for a feature Fox 2 News did on us!

This was actually Ally’s revenge on former “mascot” turned spokesmodel Mara Cranis!!!

Here’s what prompted it….

Sometimes you need to get creative like with off camera flash at a natatorium like on Danny McNeese’s senior session!

Our very first vine!!!  Back to where it all started!

So there it is!  You can see our Vines on twitter as well if you don’t have the app, and we hope you enjoyed this fun trip through our past Vines!

The Doug and Ally Morning Show on Periscope!

Hey Now!

That’s usually how we start our morning show with those Larry Sanders Show / Howard Stern inspired words, and off we go….

The Doug and Ally Morning Show!

We have been broadcasting live on Periscope since April 2015 and somewhere along the way the “Doug&Ally Morning Show” became a thing.  It wasn’t planned.  It was early on an October morning, we weren’t doing much here at the studio and we thought it would be interesting to jump on Periscope and see who was up!  We don’t officially open until 10:00 AM anyway.  Turns out a lot of people were happy to see us on and someone made the comment that it’s like a morning show…  We thought that sounded fun so we kept doing it and here we are 8 months later going strong with the morning show “officially” Tuesday through Fridays from sometime around 8:45 or 9ish until 10 or 10:30ish.  It starts when it starts and it ends when it ends….

A Life Of Its Own…

Meanwhile many things have happened along the way that have become regular occurrences / features on the show…  One of the most well known guests is an amazing caricaturist from the UK named Rich Nairn (@RichNairn on twitter and Periscope) who has been known to join the show and tweet doodles based on what’s happening.  He sketches them in black and white but he made a color one which has become the official artwork for the show and will be available on T-Shirts (and maybe coffee mugs) very soon!

Morning ShowThe phrase “You shut up, you shut up, and you shut up” has been an inside joke in Ally’s family which originated with her dad and it has become a common phrase on the show…  haha!  Notice the Periscope hearts going up the side to the right!  Here are a couple more of his from the show….

One morning we were discussing some pretty chaotic events at home in the hours before we came to work.  Ally woke up in the middle of the night with a spider crawling on her face, and I stepped in cat poop that one of the cats brought up from the basement litter box as a “trailer”….  Next thing we know Rich is commenting “tweet tweet” which usually means he’s posted a doodle and……

Morning show

Here’s one more that we’ve featured before on the blog but it’s worth repeating.  We had a photo session with a newborn baby and at one point during the session we wanted to get some naked baby photos which are precious…..when the following happened – watch the following vine:

So we were talking about this session and then Rich tweeted….

Morning show

He really is amazing – he cranks these out in minutes….  Check out his fantastic work at his website The Artful Doodler!

Fun With The Feed!

I noticed that the thumbnails that show up in the Periscope news feed are sometimes amusing because they capture candid expressions of the person broadcasting and they refresh every few seconds, and so “Fun With The Feed” was born – with it’s own logo, jingle and everything!  No one knows when one of these might happen (nor do they know if they’ll be the next victim…).

Morning Show

Here are a couple of our favorites…

Morning Show

@Amrit Singh has an awesome beard so we thought we’d help him show off all angles of it.  Meanwhile the guy is awesome and has been doing some amazing humanitarian work in the UK helping with the refugee crisis.  We met him in San Francisco in January at the Periscope Community Summit (now called Summit Live).

We also got our friend @Jaxsology with some awesome expressions – she is a really talented singer and a total comedian – one of our favorite scopers to be sure…

Morning show

Ally and I do our cheesy intro ONCE per show followed by a tour of the studio where we talk about what we do and one of our Peri-friends Nelma – @BeachBabyC actually called in and narrated the tour on speaker phone one morning!  Nelma has dubbed our living room “The Parlor” which is a great name for our little meeting area with our clients!  We have call-ins to the show every now and then including a certain ridiculous telemarketing company who calls ALL THE TIME to try to give us great insurance rates on our 2013 Acura…   Um, we’ve never had an Acura. After asking them a dozen times to be placed on their do not call list we decided to turn the tables…  Take a look:

Many of our friends have their own special entrance when they show up on the show including Erick “@making_money23” Gary – all hell breaks loose when he shows up.  There is no real rhyme or reason to who gets an intro or why – they just kinda happen…

So join us!  There are plenty of features like “the coffee test” and spontaneous shenanigans that happen on the show and you can be a part of it just by tuning in and commenting!  We have a ton of fun and we love our international community who joins us literally from all corners of the world (Russia, Malaysia, Israel, UAE, Brazil, Serbia, Japan, Australia, UK, Spain, France, Morocco, Venezuela, Turkey, India, Pakistan, Ukraine, Germany, The Netherlands, Nigeria, just to name some) every Tuesday through Friday morning (and sometimes Saturday) for the Doug&Ally Morning Show!!!

Senior Portraits With The One And Only SOCK COP!

For those of you who are on Periscope you must know about Sock Cop.  He’s a clean sock, clean cop and he spends his days keeping the streets safe by catching the speedahs….  He shares his life, his knowledge, his wisdom and his impressions of famous people in his daily broadcast and you should download the app and check out his show at @jasonburglar here (which as he’ll tell you “don’t make no sense, it don’t make no sense”).

Better Late Than Never

Meanwhile Mama Sock who did a great job raising Sock Cop unfortunately didn’t get a chance to get professional senior photos when he graduated high school so it was time to right that wrong, and in a first for our studio we actually did the session live on a broadcast during Sock Cop’s weekly show on ParachuteTV1 – the first true network on Periscope!  As we normally do we are sharing a few sneak peeks of the session here on the blog with you!

Sock Cop On Location!

We decided that the best location for the photos would be where Sock Cop is really in his element which is in front of the Police station so let’s start with a close up:

Sock Cop

We made the decision to leave the hearts in the photo because it really tells the story of where Sock Cop is in his life now – people love Sock Cop and they typically tap the screen giving him a steady flow of hearts – it just shows how much happiness he brings to people.

Next let’s take a look at the Periscope broadcast replay of the session itself!

You can see there that he was really killing it!  As a side note for whatever reason our comments were out of order on the replay, so I left the extra bit in where you can actually see where we were helping direct the shoot.  One of the other viewers said “too small”, and that was in response to our suggestion that one of these would look good as a 20×24 canvas.

Let’s take a look now at a couple more photos from the session.  First on the sign in front of the station:

Sock Cop

And lastly here is Sock Cop getting comfortable in a laid back style just chillin’

Sock Cop

And there you have it!  We were so happy these turned out so well and we hope you enjoyed the highlights from our session!!!  Hehe…

Nine MORE Types of Periscope Chatters! Survival Tips For Scopers!

For those of you who saw our previous Periscope “survival guide” blog posts and corresponding broadcasts, if you have been on Periscope since you probably know that there are way more than 13 or 14 types of chatters and scopers…

Nine More Types

We here in the Frameable Faces research department have identified NINE more types of chatters and we broadcasted our findings live to a bloodthirsty (and nervous) Periscope audience.  We now bring you the YouTube replay of that broadcast along with a list of the chatters we covered.  Here is the replay…

Nine More Types Of Chatters…

  1. The Hijacker – the hijacker will try to take the controls of your broadcast and steer it to a destination of their own choosing.  Often shouting in ALL CAPS they will try to promote their website / blog / dog – whatever.  Very spammy and potentially blockworthy if they refuse to back off…  In a promote-your-scope type of broadcast it’s okay but that’s the only place where it’s appropriate.  Side chatters can sometimes combine to unknowingly tread into this dangerous territory.
  2. The Brown Noser – somewhat self explanatory…  the scoper who the brown noser is brown nosing is a GENIUS and every point they make is revelatory…… to the brown noser.  Yes it’s okay to be a fan and thank your favorite scopers for their insights, but sheesh – sometimes it’s like Beatles fans on the Ed Sullivan show…
  3. The Security Guard – the security guard is there to keep potential trolls in line in your scope.  They will put smackdowns on inappropriate comments and alert you to whom you should block if you missed it.  The security guard can actually be a welcome chatter in your room as long as they aren’t too aggressive and start scaring the other chatters.
  4. The Aggressive Gamer – often the aggressive gamer is secretly using an external keyboard for faster typing giving them a huge advantage in Periscope games where the first correct answer is the winner.  Often these chatters will just start throwing random answers up on the screen as soon as a category is announced before the question is even asked.  Thankfully most Perigame show hosts are on to this and won’t award a win until they at least ask the question…
  5. The Cryptic Chatter – the cryptic chatter can cause chaos on a broadcast by confusing the heck out of the scoper with comments that usually relate to something said at least 30 seconds before and they put zero context in their comment like “Oh yeah sometimes for sure” or “Exactly – I HATE that”.  You must call out the cryptic chatter with a passive aggressive remark to let them know not-so-subtly that you have no idea what the heck they are talking about.  The problem as a scoper is the extra second you take to decipher the cryptic comment keeps you a half step behind the next comment that actually contributes to the conversation.
  6. The Brand Newbie – we hug the brand newbie, we embrace the brand newbie.  The Periscope community is a welcoming community of early adopters and when you see a brand newbie who tentatively enters a room with an egghead profile you should be nice to them.
  7. The Eggspert – no one likes an eggspert.  The problem with the eggspert is they have no credibility – they show up in a room and start commenting in an authoritative way like they have a ton of knowledge, and yet they can’t figure out one of the first rules and that is to get a profile avatar – a photo, a logo – something other than an egg.  It is perfectly okay for all chatters in the room to shame the eggspert.  NOTE:  Credit goes to Periscope star @MalinMOcean who coined the term “eggspert” in our broadcast when we referred to this chatter as the “no-credibility chatter”.
  8. The Spillover Commenter – this chatter breaks their comments up into multiple comment bubbles, often because they can’t boil it down to the three lines allowed in the app.  This is usually a problem because the second part of the comment comes too long after the first part which can confuse the scoper and make the second part of the comment look like the work of a cryptic chatter.
  9. The Fat Finger – autocorrect is the bane of the fat finger’s existence.  Whether due to carelessness, hurried commenting, or actual fat fingers, the fat finger chatter is often put into embarrassing situations by comments gone horribly wrong…  we’ve ALL been there.

So there you go – nine more types of chatters for you to be aware of!  Here are the links to the previous posts, and there is at least one more to come!

The 13 Types Of Periscope Scopers – A Survival Guide For Chatters!

You may have read our post about the 13 types of Periscope chatters and you may have seen the ensuing broadcast about it on Periscope which was an epic laughfest for all involved.  For that one I wrote the article first and then we did the broadcast.

Periscope Scopers

Ally and Doug probably being one of the 13…

Well the reception to that broadcast was so fantastic it inevitably required a sequel, and this time we did it in reverse.  I made a few notes, put together a slide show and we did another broadcast once again with Ally providing the demonstrations.  So now here is the companion blog post.  Now that we exposed all the different types of chatters we encounter on Periscope, let’s turn the tables on the scopers!  Here’s the actual broadcast and the breakdown of the 13 below.

The 13 Types Of Periscope Scopers…

  1. The Too Close For Comfort Scoper – this scoper isn’t going to be satisfied until you have become completely acquainted with their nose hair, teeth and eyebrows – or as some chatters pointed out in the broadcast, the pores in their skin.
  2. The Distracted By Comments Scoper – this scoper will literally try to start the same sentence 23 straight times and won’t be able to do it because they just can’t stop answering all the comments.  Always a challenge since you want to be social and talk to your viewers, but sheesh – get on with it man!!!  This scoper may also graduate to being a juggler – more on that later.
  3. The Multitasker – in the scope I referred to this one as the “JUST Missed Your Comment Scoper” but I realized this scoper isn’t paying attention to the screen because they are multitasking.  They often will ask a question and then get distracted by something else going on and then come back to the screen to catch your 3 line typed out question just as it’s fading into extinction and they’ll only get the first line before it’s gone…
  4. The Bad Lighter – this scoper is scoping in the dark while asking you your opinion on something that’s impossible to see because, well, they’re scoping IN THE DARK.
  5. The Earthquake – tons of turbulence here…  in the broadcast you’ll see that everyone was getting dizzy and nauseous because the scoper is unaware of how important it is to try to steady their smartphone.  Watch, I’ll end up feeling bad about this one if someone is scoping during an actual earthquake.
  6. The Shy Scoper – curious that someone would download this app and start scoping if they don’t want to be seen, but some scopers are nervous and they scope the floor or the wall while talking to you…  Or maybe they haven’t figured out how to double tap their screen yet.
  7. The Thankful Scoper – these people are SO happy that people have showed up to their scope!  They will gush and jump for joy when people show up, and sometimes a certain special scoper will pop in that will make them lose their mind completely.
  8. The Beggar – a potentially annoying scoper to be sure, the beggar will campaign for hearts, shares, follows, tweets, and invites.  They will find any number of creative ways to get you to tap your screen – they are completely addicted.
  9. The Overscoper – as you can see a couple people got nervous when this slide popped up in the broadcast.  Periscope can be addictive in nature, and overscoping can be dangerous to building a following especially  for those chatters who haven’t changed their notification settings and have their iPhone doing that “hello” whistle at them courtesy of the overscoper 10-20 times per day…
  10. The Unable To Gauge What’s Actually Exciting Scoper – as a side note I’m pretty disgusted with myself for misspelling “gauge” in the slide deck for the broadcast on this one…  In any event, this scoper sees a squirrel in a park and thinks it’s going to be ratings gold.  Most people have encountered squirrels.  Seeing someone else encounter one by watching it happen on your iPhone isn’t quite that exciting.  You don’t need to scope the squirrel.
  11. The Off-Topic Scoper – pretty self explanatory.  This scoper will entitle their scope “5 Things To Do In Detroit” and end up scoping about, well, a squirrel, or maybe Game Of Thrones.  Sometimes this is partly the fault of the Off-Topic chatter who throws the scoper off-topic.
  12. The Juggler – the juggler sometimes starts out as a “distracted by comments scoper”.  The juggler tries to keep three or more separate conversations with three different chatters going at the same time.  It never goes well and this inevitably can lead to injury.
  13. The Long Goodbye Scoper – this scoper says they HAVE to go.  They are signing off, but wait – they can’t leave while hearts are still flowing, comments are still going, and chatters are still showing.  These people are often closet beggars.  These goodbyes seem to go on forever and sometimes something is said that restarts and extends the scope which proves that the scoper really had nothing else to do in the first place.
  14. The Unprepared Scoper – note the title indicates that there are 13 scopers for this post, but in order to demonstrate the importance of scope preparedness we snuck in this 14th scoper which proves the point.  Prepare for your scope so you aren’t scrambling in the middle of a scope to find something else you meant to cover and can’t find.  This can be uncomfortable for all involved.

So there you have it!  The 13 Types of Periscope Scopers!  There are plenty more where they came from and I’m sure this will be good for at least a couple more scopes of categories of chatters and scopers, so stay tuned….

The 13 Types Of Periscope Chatters – A Survival Guide For Scopers!

So Periscope comes along and it’s super cool.  We all have visions of reaching an audience in an exciting new way and connecting with new friends, being entertained and seeing the world like we’ve never seen it before.  We download the app, we start to follow some scopers, we tell our friends and we start scoping……..and then they show up.  The scope chatters who tune in and, well…. make it interesting.  Just to clarify for the purposes of this survival guide for scopers, the scopers are the people broadcasting, and the chatters are the folks tuning in to watch and “chat” (type comments to the scoper and each other).

Survival Guide

Scoping can be stressful, it can lead to post traumatic scope disorder, and it’s largely the fault of these 13 types of scope chatters (and here’s a clue – we’re all guilty of being at least one if not several of these at some point).  So without further adieu I bring you:

the 13 types of chatters – a survival guide

  1. The First Comment Chatter – the first comment chatter is quick on the draw and that’s their M.O. – when they see a scope notification they pounce and furiously start typing to get their comment in before the others start scrolling.
  2. The Chatty Cathy – the Chatty Cathy is usually just so excited to be on a scope – their exuberance is often activated by a simple acknowledgement of the Chatty Cathy.  If you say hi back to a Chatty Cathy the flood gates will open and they Won’t.  Stop.  Commenting.  Relatively harmless because they are generally extremely happy people, but they can still make you a little crazy.
  3. The Troll – yes this is obvious.  Not new to social media by any stretch, the troll will usually ask a female scoper to see her boobs, or like my troll yesterday they may just stop by to tell you that they “just crapped their pants”.  Trolls are not cool, but luckily there is a relatively easy remedy for handling trolls and that is to simply block them.
  4. The Topic Trumper – the topic trumper loves the opportunity to show off their vast reservoir of knowledge by jumping into your room to spill the beans on the tip you are about to reveal.  While this may allow the topic trumper a fleeting moment of self validation, it usually doesn’t make them look so good to the other viewers/chatters.
  5. The Drop In Chatter – the drop in chatter is extremely busy.  They have a ton going on and they are probably busy with multiple million dollar generating projects or maybe they just have 5 kids but they still find the time to drop in and say hello even if they can only stay for a minute.  The drop in chatter can actually be a welcome guest, but habitual drop ins can lead to being classified as a scope hopper.
  6. The Scope Hopper – the scope hopper is a mysterious character.  Also known as “ghosting”, they like to hop around from one scope to the next, sometimes staying just long enough to make a hit and run comment.  They may genuinely want to just see what is going on around Periscope or their motives may be more sinister – they may just want to be seen or make the scoper think they are interested in their scopes when they really aren’t.  This can lead to the scope hop of shame.  6a. The Scope Hop Of Shame – just a footnote to the the scope hopper, this happens when two hoppers by coincidence hop into two consecutive scopes at the same time and discover that they are both indeed scope hopping.  The best thing to do in this case if you are one of the busted hoppers is to form an alliance with the other hopper and swear this unfortunate incident to secrecy.
  7. The Social Butterfly – the social butterfly loves to say hi to everybody in your room.  Actually a welcome chatter, the social butterfly brings all the chatters together and fosters a sense of community in your scope.  The only danger is when the social butterfly moves into the more serious and dangerous category of being a side chatter.
  8. The Side Chatter – the side chatter will recognize a friend in the scope and start an entire unrelated side conversation that sometimes goes way too long.  This can be very disruptive to the flow of comments that are actually on topic, can badly confuse the scoper, and might actually squeeze relevant comments off the screen too quickly for the scoper to respond.  This is a borderline double troll result that can sink your scope and in extreme cases may even be a premeditated conspiracy to destroy your scope.
  9. The Off-Topic Chatter – this chatter will come into your chat entitled “3 tips for sharing scopes on YouTube” and notice that you’re from New York and tell you about a restaurant they ate at in New York…. because they once lived in New Jersey about 90 minutes from…. New York so they didn’t get to New York too…. often but one time when they went they did go to said restaurant…. are you a Giant fan?
  10. The Attention Seeker – this chatter usually gets stressed when the room is very crowded and will repeatedly use 30 emojis and/or ALL CAPS in their comments to get noticed.  You may need to acknowledge the attention seeker to quiet them temporarily.
  11. The Slightly Awkward Chatter – this chatter isn’t quite a troll but makes comments that make everyone feel just slightly uncomfortable – just not enough to warrant a block.  No one has found an adequate solution yet for these people.
  12. The Lurker – the lurker never comments.  They kind of just sit in the corner and stare and their presence can be a bit unsettling.  Don’t let them bother you.
  13. The Interrupter – very often a scope begins with welcomes and introductions and even a little bit of chatting which is great.  Hearts and engagement throughout are the hallmarks of a successful scope.  But at some point the scoper might have some valuable information they want to get across.  The interrupter doesn’t understand that.  Just when the room goes quiet and the scoper gets on a roll the interrupter will ask a question that may have already been covered or they are jumping ahead.  This is very stressful for the other chatters in the room and if left unchecked can extend a scope to unbearable lengths causing a chatter exodus.  You can give the interrupter one free pass if you like, but it’s best just to ask them to DM you on twitter afterwards.

So there you have it!  Be aware of these chatters, learn to recognize them and keep this survival guide close and you should be okay!  Feel free to add to this list if there are any I’ve missed…

6 Secrets About Senior Pictures The Government Is Hiding

The government knows PLENTY about high school senior pictures – trust me.  Do not think for a second that they would ever let these secrets get out if they could plug all the leaks.  At great risk to my well being I am going to share these secrets with you because, well, I think they are important darn it.  So here are 6 secrets about senior pictures the government is hiding:

6 secrets about senior pictures

Photographs in the Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.

1.  Senior pictures could stop North Korea.  If you saw this recently you know the story goes that Kim Jong Un is making all men in North Korea get his style of haircut.  Our seniors are all about individual expression and being themselves.  Someone told me that they heard someone tell someone else that a friend said… our government is planning to unleash a bunch of our senior pictures on the North Korean population to incite an overthrow of Kim Jong Un when the people of North Korea realize how nice it looks to express yourself with any style of hair you like.

2.  Senior pictures are fun.  Okay this is a BIG one.  I’m going to guess that being a senator for example is not nearly as fun as taking senior pictures.  The government has tons of sealed files on just how fun senior pictures are and they do NOT want you to know.  Maybe the government is just jealous.

3.  Aliens love senior pictures.  That is the real story behind Hangar 18.  Aliens came to Earth to pass out wallets.

4.  Senior pictures make Presidents.  Sure this doesn’t always fit the narrative of character-shaping events they want you to focus on like George Washington chopping down a cherry tree (okay maybe that’s a bad example since there were no cameras during George Washington’s time nor were there “high schools”) or Teddy Roosevelt charging up San Juan Hill in the Spanish American War – but there are plenty of sealed documents that prove it was how most of our leaders felt about their awesome senior pictures that set them on the path to the White House.

5.  The government spied on Soviet on-location senior photo sessions during the Cold War.  Decades before senior photos became really popular in the U.S.A. some Soviet photographers were going out on location with high school seniors.  Apparently much like everything else during that time we viewed this as a communist threat, because, well, it was the Soviets.  The whole thing was short lived since the Soviets scuttled the on location program anyway, presumably because the pictures were boring.  The photographers were hired by the Soviet communist regime and were not allowed to be very creative.

6.  The government tried to limit outfit changes during senior sessions.  This was just one of those silly “government getting too big” things.  The bill was defeated when it was revealed that term limits have nothing to do with outfit limits and that freedom of expression does apply to clothing.

I know that exposing these secrets can put me at great risk but I felt it was my duty to help my fellow Americans.  Hopefully the government won’t get mad and do anythi

An Interview with Reflecto!

Those of you who have been on location with us have very likely met Reflecto.Interview with Reflecto  He’s our sometimes rogue, somewhat snarky, and quite often arrogant reflector.  He is really a character and while sometimes he gets a little out of line he’s definitely never boring, so we thought we would sit down for an interview with Reflecto and find out what’s on his mind….

FF:  Let’s get right to it – it’s been said that you are a sometimes-rogue, somewhat snarky, and even arrogant reflector.  Is that fair?

Reflecto:  Listen, haters are gonna hate, so let ’em is what I say.  It’s pretty simple.  If I am awesome and I say so does that make me the bad guy for speaking the truth?

FF:  Okay…..  Uh – we won’t try to answer that question.  How about you tell us about your childhood?

Reflecto:  I try not to talk about my past too much.  My family moved around a lot and had various jobs – wrapping York peppermint patties, getting odd jobs as foil – stuff like that.  I decided when I was old enough that I would never settle and I was able to snag this gig with Frameable Faces.  Now I run the place!  Haha!  Follow me on twitter at @reflect_o!  Winning!  I’m the be-

FF:  Hey easy – let’s stay on topic okay?

Reflecto:  Whatever – fine.

FF:  What was your best moment on a photo shoot?

Reflecto: When you are supremely talented like me there are just too many to choose from.  I enjoyed smacking Doug in the face on a shoot once.  It was quite genius really – I waited for a really windy day and then “bam”!  I really think he just thought it was the wind that caused it.  Hahaha!

FF:  You must have other moments that don’t involve violence…

Reflecto:  Okay I’ll admit that I do get some satisfaction when my beautiful reflecting makes a senior look great.  It definitely validates how great I am, and if the #frameables (yes I’ll appease Doug and Ally and call them that) are happy as a result then that’s a bonus.

FF:  Who is Blocko?

Reflecto:  I don’t know what you’re talking about.

(side note – “Blocko” is Reflecto’s alter ego and he’s nicer than Reflecto – we’re not sure why he didn’t want to talk about it)

FF:  We know that sometimes you try to blind the frameables by reflecting the sun into their eyes.  Do you think they deserve that?

Reflecto:  The media embellished that story.  My talent can be “blinding” – whoever made that comment meant it figuratively not literally.  Like Michael Jackson told Paul McCartney I’m a lover not a fighter.
